Benzoin:-
Benzoin is the organic compound that hydroxyketone with two phenyl group. Formade by the condensation of two molecules of Benzaldehyde.
This reaction is called Benzoin condensation is classically catalysed by cyanide salts. You can also used thiazolium compound like Thiamine.
Precautions:-
1. Benzaldehyde is toxic .
2. Ethyl alcohol is flammable.
3. Sodium hydroxide is corrosive.
4. Benzoin formed after the reaction is pretty nasty small.
5. Use necessary protection equipment while handling chemical.
Preparation method:-
Mechanisms:-
Step 1.
Step 2.
Material required:-
1. Thiamine hydrochloride = 3.55g
2. 95% Ethyl alcohol = 35 ml
3. 3M NaOH solution = 8 ml
4. Benzaldehyde = 20 ml
Pratical step:-
1. Taken 100ml Round botal flask and add 3.55g of Thiamine hydrochloride and 8 ml of distilled water and mix then add 95% Ethyl alcohol 35 ml .
2. Now place the Round botal flask in an ice both to cool 0 degree Celsius.
3. Drop - Drop add 3M NaOH in the Round botal flask, then colour is changed white to yellow.
4. Now add Drop - Drop 20 ml of Benzaldehyde in the Round botal flask and mix properly in whole time.
5. Warm the flask generally in a water both 60 degree Celsius for 90 min , yellow colour Cristal is seperate down in the Round botal flask.
6. After the cooling the room temperature again we contect the ice cold water to croud product.
7. Now filter the liquid crystals for simple gravity filter method.
8. Now Recristaliged for hot Ethyl alkohol .
9. 9.3g Benzoin 23% yeild .
